Nutritionist Job Responsibilities

Nutritionists and dieticians have spent a great deal of time studying the effects that foods, and combinations of foods, have on weight, energy, strength and overall health. In general, the nutritionist will evaluate your dietary needs based on your goals, which may include weight loss, muscle gain, prevention and management. The nutritionist can source the recipes and ingredients that work within your dietary guidelines, taking into account any allergies or sensitivities. The nutritionist may work in tandem with a personal trainer to suggest the foods that can power workouts and promote weight loss, or partner with a physician who has concerns about common health issues such as high blood pressure or heart disease. Nutritionists typically have at least a 4-year degree from an accredited college or university.

The well qualified nutritionist has professional experience in these hard skills but also demonstrates essential soft skills that make one-on-one work the right fit. For example, your nutritionist should listen carefully to your goals and needs, and be able to devise a dietary plan you’ll enjoy following. Excellent communication skills and critical thinking skills are also necessary. Your nutritionist should be able to teach you why certain foods are good for you — and which ones to avoid, and why. You’ll also want a nutritionist to be able to create a dietary plan that can meet the diverse needs of you and your family, if necessary. The nutritional needs and health goals of kids and adults are extremely different.
