Getaways From LA
Los Angeles is a vacation destination in and of itself, but when Hollywood Boulevard and Rodeo Drive leave you wanting more, there’s plenty to do outside the city limits. Whether you’re visiting southern California or simply looking to get out of dodge, these LA weekend trips will leave you refreshed and rejuvenated.
Santa Catalina Island
Hop on the ferry from Long Beach or San Pedro and spend the weekend exploring Santa Catalina Island, where you’ll find a destination that’s laid back, friendly for all ages and packed with fun things to do. Is it a bit touristy? Sure. But let yourself embrace the charm and check out the sights in your very own golf cart, or walk the boardwalk to catch a glimpse of the beautiful Pacific. Hike or bike through the Island and you’re sure to see buffalo — yes, buffalo — plus bald eagles, whales and other wildlife. Be sure to check out both Avalon and Two Harbors, which give off two different vibes but are still uniquely Catalina.
If you’re a connoisseur of farm-to-table cuisine and wine, head straight to Ojai, where you’ll discover a charming blend of old hippies, working artists and fresh, locally grown food. What won’t you find? Big box monstrosities that take away from its fun and funky feel. Like Santa Catalina Island, Ojai offers outdoorsy visitors plenty of activities, including Los Padres National Forest, which is just outside of town. You’ll also find enough fine food and wine to satisfy your not-so-inner snob, and that makes it the perfect "let’s keep it real" getaway.
San Juan Capistrano
California dreamers who count history as a hobby will appreciate the rich background of San Juan Capistrano, where Spanish settlers and Native American cultures collided memorably. Spend the weekend exploring Mission San Juan Capistrano’s incredible collection of artifacts, including Native American art, historical photographs, paintings, chalices and more. There are also several events that have earned must-see status. Schedule your visit to coincide with St. Joseph’s Day & Return of the Swallows, Christmas at the Mission, or see a concert at Music Under the Stars.
Joshua Tree National Park and Palm Springs
Did you know that the hottest recorded temperature in history occurred in southern California’s Mojave Desert? Make a reservation in Palm Springs and spend the day exploring Joshua Tree National Park, where you’ll find self-guided nature trails and incredible views that go all the way to Mexico. Is that an oasis you see, or are you dreaming? Nope, that’s an oasis — one of five within the park. When you’re done for the day head back to Palm Springs, where you’ll discover a funky and fun throwback resort town vibe with something for everyone.
