MEET HELEN: QUINTESSENTIALLY PEOPLE'S RESIDENT SUPER-STAR PA CONSULTANT

QP’s Helen Goulding discusses how she came to work for Q People, the fantastic roles she has placed along the way and advises how to create a stand-out CV.


What did you do before you joined Quintessentially People?
Before I joined QP I was a Higher Assistant Psychologist working in a Forensic Mental Health hospital (slight change of scene); I studied Psychology at University and went on to practice in a clinical setting, helping patients who have forensic backgrounds with their mental health as well as their offending behaviour. Although my role was very challenging and interesting, I decided that I wanted to swap it for the fast-paced and lively environment of recruitment, and Quintessentially People seemed like the perfect fit for me – I have never looked back since!


How did you get in to recruitment?

I had worked in recruitment previously whilst living in Australia after graduating, and had really thrived within the role, I loved the diversity of the challenges that I faced and the rewards that recruitment has to offer. I definitely learnt the basics there, and then since joining QP I have become a specialist in recruitment.


What do you most enjoy about your job?

The energy that recruitment has is like no other role I have ever worked in before – literally every single day can be different and the roles that we work on at QP are so diverse that new exciting challenges present themselves daily. I am very much a people person – I know that sounds cheesy – but there is nothing I enjoy more than meeting people and getting to find out what makes them tick and trying to match their skills and personality to a fantastic new role. I also have to say that having an amazing team around me has to be the biggest highlight of my job!


Give us examples of jobs have you placed recently

Running the PA and office support desk, the roles that I work on vary quite considerably in terms of location, industry, salary and seniority; I work on everything from team assistants and receptionists to private PA’s and international travelling executive assistants. Most recently I have placed some fantastic positions such as Lifestyle Manager to International Lifestyle Company in Shanghai, Private Personal Assistant to foreign Royal in Central London, PA to Famous Screen Writer and Author, Junior PA for Private Family Office of Ultra-High Net Worth Businessman. All of the roles we work on are very unique and we get some of the best opportunities in the market.


What do you look for in a candidate?

We look for a lot of different things from candidates, we deal with many varied roles that in terms of experience, personality and skills – a mixed bag is always a good one! But I think across the board we look for the following:
  • Discretion & confidentiality
  • Solid work experience with longevity within roles
  • Well-presented
  • Commitment and dedication
  • Excellent references
  • Good work ethic
  • Highly organised, good time keeping and reliability
  • Personable and professional


What do you think are the most important things a candidates CV should include?

I see so many CVs each day; some great, some not so great, and it is very easy to make small adjustments to make them stand out in a good way - the most important thing is presentation – it needs to be clear and concise…and please NO TABLES!! The most important things to have on your CV are your contact details, clear dates of employment with job title and company name and a description of what your role involved. It’s also great to start off your CV with a brief overview/profile outlining your experience and skills – this just makes the CV more personable and gives an overview form the outset. Education is always important to include too, particularly if you have further education.


The Future of QP

The PA and office support desk of QP is literally going from strength to strength, and has done so since QP established. There are lots of plans for the PA and Office Support desk in the future, with huge growth forecast and new staff coming on board to push the desk forward – we expect the PA desk to continue to grow and become the largest part of the QP business. It is a really exciting time for us at QP and we have recently opened our PA desks in New York and LA and these are both already thriving – long may the success continue.
