Job Search

Running a household is a skilled job. It requires organisation, attention to detail, excellent communication skills and the ability to ensure that everything happens at the right time. It’s for that reason that you need to know exactly what you need and, if necessary, use a household staff agency to help you recruit the right person for the job.

Do I need a House Manager?

To begin with, you need to know what kind of household support you need. A House Manager, or butler, for example, will be expected to run far more than the house itself; he or she will manage any other staff in your employment, and may be expected to travel with you, oversee many if not all of your arrangements and handle the varied administration of your estates.

This in turn, leaves you free to concentrate on your day-to-day life, meeting with your butler on a regular basis to ensure that events are being planned, travel organised, general maintenance carried out and your home and associated estate being run efficiently. This is more than luxury housekeeping – it is professional home and estate management.

How do I recruit household staff?

Hiring a manager, butler or any member of your domestic staff is no different to general recruitment in principle:

  • Create a job description – what do you want your butler, household manager or estate manager to do? What tasks and responsibilities will they have? How many hours do you expect them to work? What particular skills do you need?

  • Create your package – this will include pay and benefits, and may also cover living arrangements, travel costs, transport and anything else you think is pertinent to your circumstances.

  • DIY or agency hire – how will you find candidates? You can advertise the position in a range of targeted magazines, or you can use your own network, but many people choose to enlist the help of a specialist household staff agency. This takes the burden of recruitment away from you, gives you access to a wider pool of professional, qualified and experienced people and ensures that you only interview people who match your requirements closely.

  • Interview – you will, of course, interview personally for such an important position. You need to be confident that the person you hire will fit into your household, work well with any other staff you employ, and be able to maintain a good working relationship with you and other people in your family. It is well worth taking the time to get the interview right – hiring the wrong person can cost you a great deal in additional recruitment costs and wasted time.
