5 Tips for the New York Shoe Expo

Four times per year, the Fashion Footwear Association of New York (FFANY) holds an exposition in Manhattan. Known around the world as the New York Shoe Expo, the multi-day event is a stellar opportunity for retailers, media personnel, buyers and sellers to examine the hottest trends in the footwear industry.

Attendance at the New York Shoe Expo is limited to professionals and is closed to the general public. If you plan on visiting, you can maximize your experience by keeping five tips in mind.

1. Register for the New York Shoe Expo Early

Although you can register at the door, pre-registration allows you to take advantage of a discounted entrance fee. Plus, you reduce the amount of time waiting to get into the showroom halls.

After you pre-register, contact your preferred hotel to reserve rooms for the days of the Expo. While it is not necessary to stay nearby, it may be more convenient for you and any business traveling companions.

2. Research the Expo Exhibitors

At the FFANY website, you can find a full list of all the exhibitors for the next Expo event. Take the time to explore this list thoroughly and research each participating exhibitor. Go beyond a cursory look at websites and examine each exhibitor’s history and media reviews to give yourself a thorough understanding of what to expect.

If you have little time before the Expo to do legwork and compile a comprehensive look at the exhibitors, consider hiring an administrative assistant to take care of this responsibility. Then, you can narrow down the list of exhibitors you are most interested in visiting at the show.

3. Take Advantage of the Immediate Shoe Wall

As part of the Expo, the FFANY has asked specific exhibitors to offer examples of immediate-need footwear. This footwear is artfully displayed on the Immediate Shoe Wall.

Beyond having an aesthetic appeal, the Immediate Shoe Wall can provide a wealth of insights into trends in the national and international shoe marketplace. Take the Wall seriously, as it can provide you with an at-a-glance look at the hottest footwear types, colors and fabrics/materials for the upcoming season.

4. Dress for Success

You need to be comfortable while at the Expo, but never forget that success begets more success, and first impressions matter. Pick outfits that are easy to walk around in, but have a distinctive style. You will stand out as someone who is committed to being at the Expo and who is entrenched in the fashion world.

It goes without saying that your footwear will show a lot about you and your sensibilities, so select trendy ones that will still comfortably take you from exhibitor to exhibitor.

5. Make Connections Every Day

Even if you leave the Expo uninspired or without a desire to place orders for your business, you can still benefit from the experience. Set a specific number of people you want to meet every day and focus on building new relationships with at least that many individuals.

Gaining leverage in the footwear world is the same as any business. It truly is about who you know. The Expo makes it simpler for you to foster connections that will help you increase your presence.

Remember that the Expo will happen whether or not you attend. If it is something important for the future of your organization or personal career path, the visit is worth it.
